About

Painting is a place where I can bring a love of painting and of paintings and a continual fascination with the point at which paint starts to look like a thing in the world.

Often depicting spaces or places, usually starting with a found image, my paintings come about partly through responding to the process of making, sometimes exploring something formal or quoting passages from other paintings, sometimes through wanting to depict a certain atmosphere or location.

The most recent paintings were created for UK band Memorials‘ album artwork (Memorial Waterslides, 2024, Fire Records and All Clouds Bring Not Rain, released March 2026, Fire Records). Beginning with a conversation with Memorials (Verity Susman & Matthew Simms (previously of Electrelane/WIRE)) about the imagery they wanted me to work with, drawing on themes and concepts in each album, the paintings were made while listening to the music.

I graduated from the Royal College of Art painting MA in 2008, and I am currently based on the West Sussex Coast.

From 2003 – 2010 I co-directed Permanent Gallery in Brighton. Along with a committee of artists and curators I commissioned new works and exhibitions, accompanying texts and events. The Gallery was also host to the Permanent Bookshop which stocked independent publications, zines and artist books.
